Lot Essay

Probably by the second of two generations working in the latter part of the 16th century, Masashige was of the Kanabo, or Kanefusa, school of Nanto ('the southern capital' - Nara). The Kanabo were one of the early groups in the Yamato tradition of Nara who are believed to have influenced sword-making in Mino, as reflected in the similarity in many of the smith's names to those of the Mino smiths.
