Contemporary German pigskin over wooden boards, panelled in blind with an outer border of fleur-de-lis, roses and other foliate devices, enclosing a roll-tool border of virtues initialled CG and dated 1539, with a foliate central panel bearing the first owner's initials "I.B.P.", panelled spine with small gilt centrepieces (lacking clasps, expert repairs, more noticeable at headcap, extremities rubbed). Provenance: Johann Bartholomew Plaut (initials I.B.P. on binding, dated 1550, and full name in ink ms., crossed through, on rear pastedown) -- ink ownership inscription dated 1624 on title -- D.
