TWO MEISSEN GROUPS OF COUNT BRL'S TAILOR AND THE TAILOR'S WIFE, he modelled by J.J. Kändler and she modelled by J.F. Eberlein, he in black tricorn hat, flowered yellow frock-coat with gilt buttons and black shoes, holding a pair of scissors in his right hand and carrying a pannier with two kids on his back and riding a billy goat, the goat with two receptacles over it's shoulder and an iron in it's mouth, the tailor's wife in black mob cap, blue bodice, white apron with puce flowerheads, flowered yellow skirt and red shoes, holding a baby to her breast swaddled in a red-striped bundle and seated side-saddle on a nanny goat with a kid suckling, both on shaped rectangular mound bases applied with flowers and foliage (he with restoration to right wrist, scissors, left thumb and one horn of goat, the base cracked across, she with restoration to tip of one horn and thumbs), blue crossed swords mark, circa 1740

Lot Essay

The tailor described in Kändler's Taxa, Nov. 1740: 'Schneider, welcher aug einem Ziegenbock reutet, wie er seinen ganzen werkzeug bei sich führet'

The tailor's wife described by Eberlein August 1740: '1 Schneiderfrau mit einem stillenden kinde auf einer Ziege reitend, nebst einer jungen Ziege, die saugel'
