Lot Essay

Frederick William of Brandenburg (1620-1688), called Der Große Kurfürst ("The Great Elector") married first Louisa Henrietta of Orange Nassau and secondly Dorothy of Holstein-Glücksburg. He was an important patron of the Arts.
Pierre II Huaut arrived in Berlin in Spring 1685 and immediately worked for the Great Elector. When he returned to his home town of Geneva in 1686, he sent his two younger brothers to Brandenburg as replacements.
A smaller version (33 x 29 mm) of this portrait was sold at the Galerie Dr. phil. Hans Rudolph, Hamburg, Hotel Atlantic, 28-29 September 1950, lot 126.
We are indebted to Dr. Hans Boeckh, Geneva, for the identification of the Huaut brothers as the authors of the present enamel.
