Lot Essay

As an important symbol of Longevity, the pine tree was depicted on rhinoceros horn cups even more often that the lotus. The current example shows the achieved technique of the carvers in showing the texture of the tree with its tortuous and scaly surface as well as the refinement of the needles. See a comparable example illustrated in J. Chapman, The Art of Rhinoceros Horn Carving in China, Christie's Books Ltd., London 1999, p.175, pl.229.
