Lot Essay

This resting point midway in the six month trip between Europe and Canton was a familiar sight to both Portuguese and Dutch traders. Shown is supposedly the Dutch fleet that took control of the territory in 1652. See Le Corbeiller, Patterns of Exchange, p. 84.
