This extraordinary table features an elaborately ruffled and shell- carved frieze much inspired by 'French' designs published by Thomas Chippendale in his Director (see 1762 edition, pl. XXXI for a sofa with closely related apron). The table once formed part of the magnificent collection of English furniture formed by Henry Hirsch (d. 1931) at the turn of the century. Percy Macquoid wrote a two-part article about the collection in Country Life (25 October and 15 November 1924) in which the table is featured. Macquoid also illustrated the table among a number of other pieces from Hirsch's collection in The Dictionary of English Furniture (first published in 1927). The table appears in all three editions of this seminal work.
