Lot Essay
A bowl of similar size (36.3cm diam.) in the Harvey B. Plotnick Collection closely relates to the present bowl in its technique of manufacture and decoration (Oya Pancaroglu, Perpetual Glory, Medieval Islamic Ceramics from the Harvey B. Plotnick Collection, Chicago, 2007, cat.47, p.89). On each bowl, the animal is depicted in a lively profile under a light transparent yellow glaze with a similar ground and use of sgraffito. The incised patterns and the use of green glaze on cream ground are those found of the Amol pottery ware. However, the present bowl stands separate from the common Amol production in its vigorous drawing and its strong colours, especially the extensive use of manganese brown.
