By the late 19th century, Qajar versions of historical Safavid paintings were being done indicating a continuing influence of Iranian history as a creative source. Lively qahvehkhaneh (coffeehouse) paintings, such as the present example demonstrate this influence and illustrate the appropriation of heroic and epic themes for popular audiences (Layla S. Diba et al, Royal Persian Paintings, New York, 1998, p. 269).
