The inscription cartouche reads: "farmayesh-e (commissioned by) 'Awn Al Mamalek". A rug of very similar design, but with the field piled rather than soumac woven, was sold in these Rooms, 2 April 2009, lot 15.
Mirza Ibrahim Khan 'Awn al-Mamalik is mentioned as a founder member of the Adamiyat Society, a secret pro-constitution society. One of its prominent members was 'Ali Asghar Amin al-Sultan (Reza Sheikholeslami and Dunning Wilson 'The Memoirs of Haydar Khan Amu Ughlu', Iranian Studies, vol.6, issue 1, 1973).
