Lot Essay

The identification of the young boy with Federico Ubaldo della Rovere is suggested by the oak tree in the background, a traditional della Rovere emblem which refers to the family name and appears in their coat-of-arms. Federico Ubaldo was the long-expected and only child of Francesco Maria II della Rovere, and became Duke of Urbino in 1621, reigning until his premature death in 1623. Francesco Maria then resumed the title of Duke, and, after his death in 1631 with no other male heirs, the Duchy became part of the Papal States.
