BIANCANI, Giuseppi (1566-1624). Constructio instrumenti ad horologia solaria describenda per opportuni. Modena: Giuliano Cassiani, 1635. Two parts in one volume, 2° (288 x 205mm). Woodcut device on titles, initials, head- and tailpieces, diagrams, 3 plates (2 folding), folding table. (Lacking last leaf of second part, possibly errata leaf.) Contemporary speckled calf (rubbed, upper joint cracked at tail of spine). Provenance: Earls of Macclesfield (bookplate and blindstamp, sale Sotheby's, 10 June 2004, lot 350).
Third edition of Biancani's treatise on the shape of the earth and structure of the cosmos, and includes the FIRST EDITION OF HIS WORK ON SUNDIALS. Biancani, a Jesuit, adhered to the traditional Ptolemaic model of the universe and rejected the movement of the earth. This copy lacks the inserted illustrated leaves called for by Cinti between A3 and A4 and between A6 and B1 of the second part, but includes an illustrated leaf, unmentioned by Cinti, between K2 and K3 of the first part.
