CIRCA 1300-1200 B.C.
With bulbous body and twin strap handles, decorated in dark brown on both sides with two confronting wild goats, stylized plants between, chevrons in the field, a groundline of three concentric bands below, another above the scene

European private collection; acquired in the late 19th Century by the grandfather of the present owner.

Lot Essay

For a krater decorated with a frieze of animals with reserved muzzles and dotted eyes cf. 1989.1231.16 in the British Museum, London. Also cf. R. Higgins, Minoan and Mycenaean Art, London, 1986, p. 116 for a krater with confronted sphinxes.
