Lot Essay

These type of plates were known as sample plates, 176 such examples were given in January 1790 to the painters, who had to invent their own designs, presumably to evaluate their skills. Normally these turned out to be too complicated for dinner services and sets of sample plates were seldom sold by the factory. An important group of sample plates were part of the Charles-Otto Zieseniss Collection, sold at Christie's, Paris, 5-6 December 2001.
