Annie French studied at the Glasgow School of Art alongside fellow student Jessie Marion King whose influence on French's graphic style can be seen. Both artists worked in a unique, highly-wrought, decorative style, depicting ethereal figures in a lyrical, floral world. French exhibited at the Royal Academy frequently between 1904 and 1924 often portraying brides or maidens such as in The Garland (1906), The Forest Beloved (1905), or Scottish ballads like Can Ye Sew Cushions? (c. 1900).
