ON RELIEVING INDUSTRIAL DISTRESS. Churchill writes to Lloyd George (Chancellor of the Exchequer) four days before his wedding on the prospects of a settlement in an engineering strike (which indeed was settled next day) but expresses his concern at the considerable 'distress' in the shipbuilding towns of north-east England and the Clyde, wondering whether some advance Admiralty orders cannot be placed 'so as to carry the engineers and shipbuilders through the winter trade which promises to be exceptionally stringent. It does seem to me clumsy to let these people starve and have their homes broken up all winter and then some time in June and July when things are beginning to revive to crack on a lot of new construction and have everybody working overtime. These ought to be the sort of situations which you and I are capable of handling', advancing his plan to coordinate an announcement even in the absence of Reginald McKenna (1st Lord of the Admiralty) to 'deal with the matter in a Napoleonic spirit'.
