Lot Essay

An almost identical sugar-bowl and cover and a coffee-cup decorated by the same hand from the Charles-Otto Zieseniss Collection were sold by Christie's, Paris, on 5-6 December 2001, lot 225.

The mark of a small house or cottage as found on the present sugar-bowl is also known on Saint-Cloud wares of circa 1730. Its attribution to Jean-Jacques Antheaume in a 19th century publication would not appear to be based on documentary evidence. See David Peters, Sèvres Plates and Services of the 18th Century (Little Berkhamsted, 2005), Vol. I, p. 99.
