A CONTINENTAL ROCOCO GOLD-MOUNTED LACQUER CARNET-DE-BAL SET WITH A PORTRAIT MINIATURE
POSSIBLY SCANDINAVIAN OR GERMAN, CIRCA 1770, THE FLANGE STRUCK WITH AN UNIDENTIFIED MARK
Slightly tapering rectangular étui-à-tablettes with arched top, sides of cover and base of brown lacquer inlaid with circular gold paillons, obverse and reverse of the cover applied with pierced gold inscription 'SOUVENIR D'AMITIE' within pierced reeded gold borders with tied ribbon cresting and laurel garlands, obverse of the base centred with an oval plaque set with monogram 'JBC' in gold, on woven hair ground, reverse of the base centred with an oval portrait miniature on ivory of a lady in white, gold mounts engraved with zig-zag pattern, polished push-piece, containing a three-leaf ivory tablet
