The black and gilt-decorated adjustable shade above an imbricated central shaft and a plinth supporting three seated putti bearing cymbals, triangle and castanets, with scrolled dolphin clasps issuing foliate branches with vase-shaped nozzles and drip-pans, above a spreading acanthus and anthemion-wrapped socle with lion-paw feet on a plinth, stamped on the plinth 'THOMIRE A PARIS', drilled for electricity, the branches early 19th century and added by Messrs. Hatfield after 1930, the square shaft and shade added later by Partridge

Presumably acquired by George John, 2nd Earl Spencer (1758-1834), for Spencer House, London or Althorp, Northamptonshire.
Thence by descent to Albert Edward John, 7th Earl Spencer (1892-1975), who found it in a cellar at Althorp in 1933 and commissioned Hatfields to add the branches.

The stamp is that of the firm of Pierre-Phillippe Thomire (1751-1843), the foremost bronzier of the Napoleonic Empire period. From 1819 the company seems to have used the stamp Thomire & Compagnie.
