The present sitter was the 2nd daughter of William Henry, 3rd Baron Lyttleton (1742-1837) and his wife, Lady Sarah Spencer (1787-1870). According to the inscription on the counter-enamel by Henry Pierce Bone, the present portrait was commissioned by George John, 2nd Earl Spencer, K.G. (1758-1834), the sitter's grandfather.
