A BRITISH POST-1805 REGULATION NAVAL OFFICER'S SWORD
EARLY 19TH CENTURY
With straight single-edged spear-point blade with full length fuller on each side, signed 'J.J. RUNKEL SOLINGEN' on the back-edge and with etched blued and gilt decoration for half its length including the Royal Arms and a crowned fouled anchor, gilt-brass stirrup-hilt with langets each engraved with a fouled anchor, lion's head pommel, ivory grip with wire binding and applied gilt-brass escutcheon on each side, one engraved with the Royal coat of arms, the other with Spencer family coat of arms, and blue and gold bullion sword-knot

Lot Essay

Both the 2nd and 4th Earls would have been entitled to wear a sword of this type. George John Spencer, the 2nd Earl, served as First Lord of the Admiralty from 1794 until 1826 and his second son Frederick, the 4th Earl, led a long and distinguished naval career becoming a Vice-Admiral.
