THREE JADE DAGGER-FORM PENDANTS AND A CIRCULAR NECKLACE CLOSING DEVICE
LATE SHANG/EARLY WESTERN ZHOU DYNASTY, CIRCA 1200-1000 BC
One a miniature, slightly curved dagger with beveled edges, surmounted by a bird's head with hooked beak and crest, opaque and of olive-beige color; one in the shape of a ge halberd blade, with a dragon carved along the back edge, now completely opaque; another a ge halberd blade, carved on both sides in double lines with a median ridge and borders following the shape of the blade, the tang in the shape of a bird's head, semi-translucent and of olive-white color; the flat, disc-shaped closing device well carved on both sides with a bird coiled around the tiny central aperture, opaque and of buff color, with traces of cinnabar

Lot Essay

The circular necklace closing device is similar to one, also carved with a coiled bird, excavated from Tomb No. 9 at Zhuyuan'gou, Baoji, Shaanxi province, illustrated by Gu Fang, The Complete Collection of Jades Unearthed in China, vol. 14, Beijing, 2005, p. 54. Two others in the Sonnenschein Collection, are illustrated by S. Salmony, Archaic Chinese Jades, The Art Institute of Chicago, 1952, pl. LXII (2 and 4).
