1938 HARLEY DAVIDSON "FLATHEAD" WITH SIDECAR

Frame No. 38 U2 393
Dark green.

Engine: Side valve (flathead) 74cu.in, 1,200cc.

The 74cu.in. model was introduced by Harley Davidson in 1930 and continued in production until 1940. Initially when this model was introduced it suffered a number of teething troubles, but by the middle thirties it was considered a very dependable machine and used by a number of police forces across America.

This model, with its heavier frame and lower riding position, made an ideal sidecar machine. When originally fitted with a sidecar, a reverse gear was added to the gearbox, as in the case of this example. Another feature, making it even more popular, was the fact that all wheels were interchangeable by the simple procedure of a single nut on the wheel spindles.

The outfit offered in this sale was acquired in 1990 by the vendor from the family of the original owner who lived in an American retirement home. It now has Swiss registration documents.

The attested 17,000 miles since new is believed to be correct and is reflected in the condition of the outfit. It passed a Swiss MoT test after minimal attention in 1990 and has not really been used since, apart from regular warm-up exercises.

This is a rare opportunity to acquire an original example of this legendary marque.
