Lot Essay
This work is based on the works by his predecessors Dapper and Van Domselaar and on materials furnished by the author's father Isaac Commelin (who gave a short description of Amsterdam in his work of 1665 about France, Spain etc.)
Commelin was a respected clergy-man in Amsterdam and had free access to the Amsterdam city archives, enabling him in completing this work and therefore it also contains much more reliable sources and official documents than the works by Dapper and Van Domselaar.
Commelin died in 1693, his work was first published posthumously in 1693-94.
The present lot is a good and complete example of the 1694 issue.
