AN APULIAN RED-FIGURED VOLUTE-KRATER
ATTRIBUTED TO THE PAINTER OF COPENHAGEN 4223, CIRCA 340 B.C.
Side A: with a young warrior within an Ionic naiskos, foot resting on a rocky outcrop, holding pilos helmet in left hand, spears and shield in right, wearing short belted tunic, fillet and wreath hanging in the field, a standing nude youth to the left, cloak draped over left arm, holding up a wreath and fillet, standing draped female to the right holding alabastron and fan, the neck with central female head wearing diadem and large earrings, emerging from a flower, ornate scrolling flowers either side, band of dotted rosettes above; side B: a kylix atop a filleted stele, a draped female offering bearer to the left, foot resting on rocky outcrop, holding alabastron and phiale, a nude male offering bearer to the right, cloak draped around left arm, carrying large floral garland, fillet in the field, palmettes on the neck, band of laurel above; band of meander and dotted squares below the scenes, tongues on the shoulder, ovolo on the rim with band of wave below, large double palmettes under the handles, the volutes with moulded female heads, the shoulders with moulded duck heads framing the handles, details in added white, yellow and red
