Lot Essay

A rug of exactly this design, the coat of arms of the Shah of Iran, is illustrated in P. R. J. Ford, Oriental Carpet Design, London, 1981, no.367, p.163. A similar rug depicting the arms of Iraq, and dating from a similar period, was sold in these Rooms 15 April 2010, lot 89.
