Lot Essay

The approx. knot count is 8H x 7V per sq. cm.

The previous lot in the sale is a typical early example of the "new" style of weaving in Isfahan that came in between the world wars. The present rug is interesting in that it is one of those rare examples that shows the change in progress. The wool and cut of the pile are typical of the new style, as is the red of the central medallion. But the intense indigo of the border is more typical of the older Isfahans, as are the vases in the corners and the variety of strong colours often in sharp juxtaposition. These indicate that this rug was probably woven as the change was happening, in around 1920.
