Each of oval form, the reticulated key-pattern gallery flanked by pierced Chinoiserie handles, decorated in the Japonisme taste, with a central medallion enriched in gilt with an 'AS' monogram under a ducal coronet flanked by birds perched in flowering branches, the quatrefoil and honeycomb reserves adorned at each end with a gilt roundel enameled with a bird in flight, raised on four pierced strapwork feet

A crowned 'MA' monogrammed service was made by Minton in 1874 for HRH Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, on the occasion of his marriage to Maria Alexandrovna, daughter of Tsar Alexander II of Russia. Known to be a patron of the Minton factory and with the family name of Saxe-Coburg, it is not impossible that the present bowls, each with the monogram 'AS' beneath a ducal coronet, were also made for Prince Alfred, 2nd son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
