Lot Essay

Voir Gunn, M. et Peltier, P., Nouvelle-Irlande, Arts du Pacifique Sud, Musée du Quai Branly, Milan, 2007, comme ouvrage de référence.
Le visage étroit de ce masque présente des traits puissants : nez busqué, grands yeux aux pupilles serties d'opercules de turbo, et bouche entrouverte découvrant des dents peintes. Une imposante coiffure asymétrique, montée sur une armature de branches souples et composée de fibres végétales teintes, de chaux et de laine, surmonte la sculpture.
Les masques tatanua étaient utilisés lors de cérémonies liées au malangan ou pour mettre fin aux tabous funéraires.
