Erbach is one of the small towns, along with Michelstadt, in the Odenwäld region of Germany. A centre of ivory carving, establsihed by Count Franz I of Erbach-Erbach in 1775, who sponsored the revival of the craft and learnt himself in Vienna. By 1783 a guild was founded in Erbach and trade flourished in the 19th Century, particuarly renouned for its production of ivory jewellery from the 1860's. However, by the 1890's trade was diminishing, although a school for ivory carving was started in 1892 led by Christian Kehrer (1770-1869) and his son.
