Lot Essay

Dr. Kroes (op. cit., pp. 300-302) notes that by family tradition, the crate containing the shaped pieces of this service broke on the East India Co. docks; thus only dishes and plates survive. He attributes the order to Pieter van Herzeele (1702-83).
