Lot Essay

Made for Frederik Gyllenborg (1698-1759). Apparently the drawing of his coat-of-arms became damp on the journey to China, smearing the ink and resulting in this 'smoky' effect that was then dutifully copied by the Chinese porcelain painters onto each piece of his service. J. Wirgin, Fran Kina till Europa, p. 137, illustrates a number of pieces including a tureen and a shell-shaped salt.
