Lot Essay

Howard notes (op. cit., vol. I, p. 493) that this service was "...undoubtedly made for Webber of Cornwall and Ireland...[probably] for Captain William Webber...at Canton in 1753", and also reports that "...the tinctures are incorrect." The shield's grisaille markings appear to be copied from engraving hatchmarks.
