This model of cartonnier is twice illustrated in a Sormani catalogue entitled 'Cabinets de Travail' (reproduced above). Stock number 2413, it is described as 'Cartonnier cintré satiné et violet, 35.5 cm. high'.

Although signed by Sormani, it was purchased by the present owner from the family of Jean Bieder, who was François Linke's contremaitre, and who had in turn bought it from Linke or his heirs. Another, slightly larger, example, also from the Bieder family, sold A Private Collection Volume II, Sotheby's, New York, lot 92.
