Carved as a vigorous sage in billowing robes, the hair carved in a cone as if blown by a high wind, the figure gold lacquer, the robe embellished with gold, red and silver hiramaki-e roundels of dragons, fretwork, flowers, diaperwork and lotus, the head brown lacquer with red highlights to hair and surmounted by an ox-head, staff polished wood, wood base

Lot Essay

In Chinese cosmology Saturn represents the element "earth" among the five elements and "center" of the five directions. Saturn rules the heart, representing virtue and sincerity; the color yellow; fragrant smells; sweet tastes and the ox, as appears here as a headdress, among other animals.
