A gilt bronze figure of Avalokiteshvara
Tibeto-Chinese, 18th century
Finely cast seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus base with raised petals and pendant sashes, the left hand in varadamudra and the right raised before his chest holding the stem of a lotus rising to the side, clad in a sanghati with borders incised with a floral motif secured at the front with a sash tied in a bow, a scarf about his shoulders, and beaded jewelry inlaid with hardstones, the face in a meditative expression with heavy-lidded eyes centered by an urna, the long tresses piled in a multi-tiered chignon with locks escaping to the sides, crowned with a five-part tiara with an ornamental clasp on the reverse, and the base sealed and incised with a double-vajra
