NORTH EAST IRAN, 13TH CENTURY
The stylistically modelled horse formed slightly leaning back on its rear legs, with engraved decoration including a strapwork roundel at the horse's back and chest and bands of geometric strapwork or scrolling vine leading to the saddle, the bridle decorated with a series of small roundels, the mane picked out with wavy lines, an attachment loop at the rear, holes at the saddle, belly and rear, greenish patina

This full bodied horse has a great depth of decorative detail, particularly in the engraved stylised trappings. Two horse heads of similar quality are in the Nasser D. Khalili Collection, published in Chevaux et Cavaliers Arabes, J. Digard ed., Paris, 2003, pl. 81, p. 133.
