EGYPT OR SYRIA, EARLY 16TH CENTURY
Rising from short indented foot to rounded rectangular body, domed lid with central flaring cylindrical handle, sides and lid with geometric roundels alternating with blazons on geometric design ground, bordered above and below by bands of engraved strapwork with interspersed roundel rosettes, the rim of the lid with scrolling vine, small repairs from where hinges and clasp had previously been attached, minor areas of rubbing

Lot Essay

The inscriptions around this box are verses in Arabic, which are not fully deciphered.

The blazons on the sides and the lid of this container are the same as those published in L.A. Mayer, Saracenic Heraldry, Oxford, 1999, pl. LXII. There he describes the blazon and attributes it to Khairbak min Aynal d. March 1516 AD (op.cit., p.138).
