QAJAR IRAN, DATED AH 1297/1875-76 AD
With rounded ends and sliding tray, the interior with gold inkwell with hinged lid in the shape of a flower head, the top and sides of pencase with gold outlined cartouches depicting Bahram Gur and the seven pavilions and four female portraits, with captions in elegant nasta'liq, the underside, ends and exterior side of tray with gilt floral design, top with date and dedication and later added signature of Kazim ibn Najaf Ali, with slight chipping in lacquer on edges on rounded ends, otherwise in very good condition

Lot Essay

The lid of this qalamdan is inscribed, farmayesh-e yusuf khan sana 1297, 'On the order of Yusuf Khan in the year 1297 [1879-1880 AD]'. Yusuf Khan may well refer to Mirza Yusuf Khan Mustashar al-Dawla (d. 1895) who was a very influential diplomat and political thinker. Amongst other positions, the charges d'affaires in Paris from 1867 to 1870.
