AN OTTOMAN ENAMELLED AND INSET GILT COPPER (TOMBAK) DAGGER
TURKEY, LATE 18TH CENTURY
The gently curving and tapering double-edged watered steel blade with gold damascened arabesque spandrels at the juncture, the waisted oval section hilt of gilt-copper enamelled along the centre line with a band of white cartouches containing pink floral sprays and linking similar shaped panels above and below, the sides with enamelled turquoise bands, the upper finial with a central red inset stone flanked by two bands of clear stones, the tombak sheath with white enamelled floral cartouches and large indigo cartouches of scrolling interlaced arabesques divided by smaller turquoise ground arabesque cartouches, slightly rubbed, enamels chipped by lower terminal

The enamelled decoration on this dagger is very similar to that on a series of slightly smaller Ottoman knives which bear signatures and dates from the late 18th century. Two of these knives were sold in these Rooms 28 April 1988, lots 122 and 123, each of which was dated to AH 1207 (1792-3 AD).
