RARE WINES FROM A FRIEND OF CHRISTIE'S
The following cache of wine arrives to Christie's from a frequent consignor and lover of Bordeaux. Most of these wines were purchased from Christie's London in the mid 80's and kept since in a combination of home and professional temperature and humidity control.
Highlights include the best of the best from 1955 in both standard and magnum format as well as cases of 1982 Haut Brion and 2006 d'Yquem in the original wood cases. Bid with confidence.
1955 VINTAGE
A Michael Broadbent ***** Vintage
"A very good, somewhat underestimated yet useful vintage, now undeservedly neglected. On the whole beneficial weather conditions. A warm sunny summer, welcome showers in September and a decent-sized crop harvested in good conditions. It would seem that I have more notes than almost any vintage in the 1950's, literally hundreds, but fewer than 40 made since 1989." Michael Broadbent, Vintage Wine
Château Lafite-Rothschild--Vintage 1955
Pauillac, 1er cru classé
Level: upper-mid shoulder; very slightly protruding cork, nicked capsule, wrinkled, lightly wine stained and bin soiled label
A delightful, well-nigh perfect Lafite vintage. Many notes. Misleadingly advanced in the early 1960's but, as so frequently, developing fragrance and nuances of flavor. Beguiling if one has the patience, opportunity and time; and do not let a touch of astringency marr its lingering flavor and aftertaste. In some ways it epitomises all the virtues, that noveau tasters and writers despise: delicacy, charm, subtely, lenght and the sort of weight-or lack of it-that makes this sort of wine such a perfect drink or 'food wine', to use a more vulgar term. A beautiful lady, slow to reveal her charms, needing patience and understanding. Last tasted Aug 2000***** should still be delicious.MB, Vintage Wine
