A LARGE QUATREFOIL CLOISONNÉ ENAMEL JARDINÈRE
KANGXI PERIOD (1662-1722)
Formed by four bracket-lobed sides, well enamelled on each section with green-ground cartouches enclosing a pair of writhing dragons confronting a stylised lotus spray, all on a dense diaper-patterned turqouise ground, the flaring rim with a lotus scroll band below pendent ruyi heads, the base decorated with scrolling lotus blooms and with two cash-shaped apertures for drainage, all raised on four ruyi feet

It is rare to find this combination of form and design. The decorative motifs, particularly the highly stylised dragons and the diaper ground, compare well with a rare cloisonné enamel incense stand illustrated by Sir Harry Garner, Chinese and Japanese Cloisonné Enamels, London, 1970, pl. 65, and later sold at Christie's New York, The C. Ruxton and Audrey B. Love Collection, 20 October 2004, lot 703. Another jardinière of similar shape is illustrated by Chen Lihua, Collections of the Palace Museum: Enamel Wares, Beijing, 2008, p. 43, no. 25.
