Lot Essay

The current cup is representative of the 10th month of the Chinese lunar calendar, usually identified by the flowering Chinese rose (yuegui) beside low rockwork with three insects in flight.
The inscription reads:
Busui qianzhong jin, dufang yinian hong, which may be translated as 'Unlike the myriad blossoms that flower and wither, the rose alone is perennial and red'.
