Lot Essay

With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch with silvered dial, raised gold indexes and fifth of a second divisions in 1944 and its subsequent sale on 6 December 1945.

Purchased by the father of the actual owner in New York in 1945, the watch has never been offered in public before and is furthermore preserved in very good, original overall condition. Originally fitted with a silvered dial, the watch was upgraded with the present pink gold version immediately after the sale. According to research, it is only the eight example of a reference 1491 in pink gold with pink dial to appear in public to date.

Reference 1491 was launched in 1940 and made in two versions, the first series with calibre 12'''120 and subsidiary seconds, the second, such as the present watch, as of 1943 with calibre 12 SC movement and sweep centre seconds. The model is distinguished by its highly decorative scroll lugs, demonstrating Patek Philippe avant-garde spirit by using varying shapes and forms, breaking away from the straight-forward circular shape with plain lugs. Inspiration from architecture, geometry and history created a new graciousness of form with rounded corners, stepped and triple-stepped forms and other elements, like scrolls.
