CIRCA 1685
The cream-coloured ground decorated in dark-brown and light-brown slip with a full-length portrait of the King, crowned and wearing his coronation robes, flanked by the initials CR and demi-flowerhead and leaf-ornament within linked navette-shaped panels and a trellis-pattern border reserved with the name RALPH·SIMPSON (hairline crack to rim at 10 o'clock, small areas of restoration to rim, slight flaking)
17¼ in. (43.8 cm.) diam.

Grigsby, English Slip-Decorated Earthenware at Williamsburg, Williamsburg, Virginia, 1993, p. 48, pl. 55, for a similar dish by Simpson painted with a full-length portrait and flanked by the initials GR, probably for George I. The author also suggests that this initial may also stand for Gulielmus Rex, indicating that the portrait may represent William III.
