Lot Essay

Between sex and eroticism, violance has always found a place in Pierre et Gilles's work. In accordance with their double attribute that makes them fetishists and aesthetes at the same time, Pierre et Gilles use nature throughout their images as a recurring motif and turn it into a metaphor of libidinous sublimation.

This is clearly illustrated in the series
Les plaisirs de la forêts (the pleasures of the Forest), in which the artists chose the woods as a natural scenario in which to locate and to develp an array of events with an openly erotic tone. The forest as an artistic evocation has the reputation of being a sanctuary for whoever is willing to be free and run wild; even in their most obscure desires. Thus, tales and legends abound in the Universal Literature associating the wreck of men with the forest as a place for madness, as a world beyond the rational that is even related to self-induced death. In traditional stories the forest symbolizes the nest of every other uncivilized thing; a hidden kingdom somewhere between the mysterious and the strange: the realm of sexual imagination populated by fantastic creatures from out of his world _ sorceresses, satyrs, wild beats.
