Lot Essay

The present enamel is taken from a mezzotint by Richard Houston (1721/1722-1775) after a painting by William Hoare (1707-1792), now in the National Portrait Gallery, London (inv. no. NPG D1279).
John Sadler is believed to have invented the process of transfer-printing circa 1750. In 1761 he created a company called Sadler and Green with a business partner. The present miniature was painted before the creation of this firm.
