Lot Essay

In 1947 Piper received a commission from art and architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner (1902-1983) to write and illustrate a King Penguin book about Romney Marsh, Kent. The book shows Piper's devotion to the churches of this area. He described Old Romney Church as one of the 'best and least spoiled Georgian interiors in the country' (J. Piper, Romney Marsh, London, Penguin, 1950, p. 15).

Piper gifted the present work, his study book for Romney Marsh, to Pevsner. In it he has mocked up the colour leaves of the Romney Marsh book on a similarly small scale to the published book, showing abbreviated details of the individual drawings, each carefully titled as in the book.
