This garden ornament was modelled by the artist as a maquette for a stone carving commissioned through the Omega workshops by Lady Hamilton. The sculpture was not completed and the stone for the carvings remained, almost untouched, outside the artist's studio after he left England to fight for France. It shows direct influence from Gaudier's study of primitive sculpture (R. Cole, loc. cit.).

The carved plaster of Maquette for Flower Vase 2 (Garden Ornament 3) (1914), is in the collection of Kettle's Yard, Cambridge.
