A ROMAN BRONZE APOLLO
CIRCA 2ND CENTURY A.D.
Likely based on a Hellenistic prototype, with a long attenuated body, and youthful, almost effeminate curves, the god depicted nude, standing on a thin rectangular integral plinth, his weight on his right leg, his left bent at the knee with the heel lifted, his torso twisting slightly with the right arm held before him, the left shoulder back, with the forearm brought forward, both hands clasping now-missing attributes, likely a laurel branch in one, perhaps a snake, kithara or bow in the other, his hair arranged in an elaborate coiffure, center parted, bound in a band, rolled back at the sides, a portion brought up in a prominent top-knot, the remaining gathered in a chignon at the nape of his neck, with single wavy tresses falling onto each shoulder and two between his shoulder blades, wearing a braided baldric diagonally across his body between his fleshy pectorals, his youthful face with idealizing features, the articulated eyes with thick lids and arching brows
4 5/8 in. (11.7 cm.) high
